NBA approves switch from Bobcats to Hornets

The NBA Board of Governors officially approved a name change that allows the Charlotte Bobcats to become the Hornets again after the 2013-14 season.

The team reclaimed its original name that went to New Orleans when the franchise moved there and remained the Hornets until it was dropped in favor of Pelicans after this past season.

The 2013-14 season will be the final one as the Bobcats.

"We're thrilled to bring back the Hornets to Charlotte and the Carolinas," Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said. "The passion and enthusiasm around this name change by fans in this market has been unmatched. They overwhelmingly told us what they wanted, we listened and we couldn''t be happier with the Board of Governors' approval of the name change.

"With the young team we are developing on the court, the direction of our business and the return of the Hornets name, we are extremely excited about our future. The Buzz is Back!"

The next step in the transition will be the development of colors, logos and uniforms, the team said.

Enzi unmentioned, Cheney opposes 'cutting deals'

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) ? Liz Cheney struck a no-compromises tone Wednesday as she launched her campaign to unseat Wyoming's senior U.S. senator, Mike Enzi.

The elder daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney addressed reporters in Casper and Cheyenne a day after announcing her bid to oust Enzi, a three-term incumbent and fellow Republican.

Speaking in Cheyenne, Cheney said it's time for Republicans in Congress to stop "cutting deals" with Democrats.

Cheney did not once mention Enzi by name or indirectly during the 15-minute news conference. Instead, she focused a series of blistering attacks on President Barack Obama, accusing him of working to disarm the country and nationalize much of the economy.

"We've got to stand and fight, and we have to defend what we believe in. We have to not be afraid of being called obstructionists," Cheney said.

"In my view, obstructing President Obama's policies and his agenda isn't actually obstruction; it's patriotism," Cheney said. "I think we have to stop what he's doing, and then as conservatives, we've got to say, 'Here's what we believe,' and, 'Here's the path forward,' and that's what I intend to lay out in this campaign."

Cheney didn't give specifics in response to reporters' questions about what she believes Enzi might have done to show complicity with Obama's agenda.

But she said, "Instead of cutting deals with the president's allies in Congress, we can be opposing them every step of the way."

Cheney would not answer if her "cutting deals" remark referred to Enzi, who has expressed pride in being able to work with Democrats on some issues. He declined to comment about Cheney's run against him.

Cheney's father is still widely admired in his home state, yet some Republicans already are lining up behind Enzi. They include Wyoming U.S. Sen. John Barrasso and the state's lone U.S. representative, Cynthia Lummis, as well as the National Republican Senatorial Committee led by Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan.

Cheney downplayed her opposition from fellow Republicans.

"I am really going to work hard for the votes of the people of Wyoming. I think that the people of Wyoming are pretty smart about these things," she said by phone after the news conference.

"When you hear things like the NRSC is behind Sen. Enzi, I think that frankly a lot of the response of the people of Wyoming is: 'We're going to decide this. Nobody from outside the state is going to tell us how to vote.'"

Asked about gay marriage ? her sister Mary is a lesbian and Dick Cheney has openly supported gay marriage ? Liz Cheney said the issue should be left to voters in each state to decide by referendum.

A Republican primary brawl could help a Democrat seeking the office, but only if the Wyoming Democratic Party is able to transform itself quickly from the weakling it's become in recent years.

No Democrat has expressed interest in running for Enzi's seat next year, and no Democratic candidate has been competitive in a statewide race since two-term Democratic Gov. Dave Freudenthal left office in 2010.

Wyoming Democratic Party Chairman Pete Gosar, of Laramie, said he sees little difference between Enzi and Cheney. Gosar ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination in the 2010 Wyoming governor's race and works as a pilot for the state.

"Until I see some sort of people-centered, issue-based solution agenda, then I don't know that somebody who ascribes 100 percent with the national Republican philosophy is any different from someone who ascribes 99.9 percent with it," Gosar said. "So they look very similar to me."

Robin Van Ausdall, executive director of the state Democratic Party, said the party is looking for viable Senate candidates. She declined to name potential contenders.

She called Cheney "an outsider, and very extreme."

"I do think that it does present an opportunity for Democrats," she said.

Abducted girl rescued by teenagers on bicycles

Two hours after she was abducted from the front yard of her apartment complex, 5-year-old Jocelyn Rojas of Pennsylvania was found safe?by two teenage boys on bicycles. One of the boys, 15-year-old Temar Boggs, is now being hailed as a hero, the Huffington Post reports.

As police and firefighters scoured the area surrounding Lancaster Township on Thursday, Temar asked a friend, Chris Garcia, to join him in the search. When Temar spotted a girl matching Jocelyn's description in the passenger seat of a man?s car in nearby Manheim Township, he and Chris gave chase to the vehicle on their bikes.

?As soon as the guy started noticing we were chasing him, he stopped at the end of the hill and let her out, and she ran to me and said that she needed her mom,? Temar told Fox 43.

The suspect remains at large, but Temar has received plenty of recognition for his act of bravery. According to Fox 43, he and Chris beat more than 100 first responders in finding Jocelyn.

?There are no words to say,? said Tracey Clay, Jocelyn?s grandmother. ?I?m so grateful.?

Thanks to Temar, Jocelyn and her family can rest easy, but for Manheim Township Police Sgt. Jeff Jones, the work isn?t over.

?We?ve certainly all heard of worse stories with not-so-happy endings,? Jones said, ?but this would be a much happier ending if we find the person responsible.?

Baseball: Scherzer gets nod for all-star game

NEW YORK: Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer and New York Mets' Matt Harvey have been selected as the starting pitchers for the 2013 Major League Baseball all-star game.

National League manager Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants and American League skipper Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers made the announcements on Monday.

Harvey will be the first pitcher to start an all-star game in his home stadium since Roger Clemens for Houston in 2004. The young Mets right-hander is 7-2 with a 2.35 ERA and an NL-best 147 strikeouts in 19 starts this season.

"It's a huge honour," said Harvey of the start at Citi Field park.

Harvey will be the first Mets all-star starting pitcher since Dwight Gooden in 1988. Harvey didn't make his first MLB start until July 2012.

The only other Met pitcher to start an all-star Game was Tom Seaver in 1970.

Scherzer is 13-1 this season, suffering his first loss on Saturday against Texas.

He is tied with Tampa Bay's Matt Moore for the MLB lead in wins and is second in the American League with 152 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.19 in 19 starts.

The line-up for the American League will open with Anaheim Angels' Mike Trout in left field, followed by New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and reigning MVP Miguel Cabrera of Detroit at third.

Baltimore slugger Chris Davis will play first base. He will be followed in the batting order by Toronto right fielder Jose Bautista, Boston designated hitter David Ortiz, Baltimore centre fielder Adam Jones, Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy.

Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips will lead off batting for the National League with St. Louis right fielder Carlos Beltran up next. Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto will hit third and Mets third baseman David Wright will bat clean-up.

Colorado left fielder Carlos Gonzalez will hit fifth followed by St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Colorado's Michael Cuddyer will be the designated hitter and Washington's Bryce Harper bats ninth and will play centre field.

Sanaa Lathan, Denzel Washington Deny Mistress Cheating Affair Report

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) ? Sanaa Lathan and Denzel Washington previously denied mistress cheating affair allegations several years ago. But now Star Magazine, which once reported Britney Spears got married to a photographer in Mexico, claims that Denzel is off allegedly cheating with an unidentified woman and that Denzel Washington?s wife is seeking a divorce.

The Sanaa Lathan, Denzel Washington nonsense was disputed by the co-stars several years ago. In 2006, she first dispute the allegations in a news interview with Vibe. ?[The rumor] got started because the movie had a love scene with Denzel, and people took that and translated it to real life. They said I was pregnant with Denzel?s child, and people were calling my mother, saying I?m having his baby. It?s frustrating. People are going to talk no matter what.? The two appear in the 2003 thriller movie ?Out of Time.?

Now this week Star is reporting that the Denzel is having an affair with someone else. His rep calls this ?nonsense?. Star also claims that the Washingtons are divorcing. But Denzel and wife Pauletta ?are not divorcing, not separating?, their rep tell news.

The false claim reads ?Four photographs, seen by Radar and shopped to other media outlets, show him sitting on a couch with a young lady, and then throughout the series of pictures he grabs her arm and pulls her in for a kiss on the lips in one. The woman is not identified and Radar was not able to verify the authenticity of the photographs.? Pauletta tells news that she is not leaving Denzel, nor divorcing nor separating.

The Engadget Interview: Nokia's Stephen Elop on the Lumia 1020

The Engadget Interview Nokia's Stephen Elop on the Lumia 1020

As expected, the Nokia Lumia 1020 arrived with 41 megapixels in tow at today's event in New York City. Got questions? Yeah, us too. Thankfully, we had a bit of time to sit down with none other than Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who was fresh off the on-stage Q&A, wearing a slick pair of bright yellow Converse All-Stars, in honor of the eye-popping color scheme of the handset he showed off earlier today. Elop seemed genuinely excited by his new device (even jokingly correcting me when I called it his "new toy"), taking a picture of us immediately after entering the room -- or, rather, he took a picture of our own Richard Lai and zoomed out to reveal me. The concept of re-framing is a huge part of what Nokia's selling -- take a picture first and worry about framing it later. With 41 megapixels, it's easy enough to zoom in or out after the fact.

Richard brought along a trio of handsets for comparison, including the N8, 808 PureView and the recent Lumia 925, so naturally we started with a little history -- much like the press conference itself. Of interest was at precisely what point Nokia began to envision optics as one of, if not the, key focus of its handsets. It was an appropriate visual from Elop's point of view -- the executive sees all of the above as entries in the company's evolutionary line. Nokia's focusing on improving the experience a bit with each and every link, says Elop, with the latest handset building atop of the lessons learned. The Lumia 1020 is, naturally, a culmination of those lessons.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active UK SIM free price and availability

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active UK SIM free price and availability

Samsung has come under a bit of criticism in the last few weeks since it launched a number of different Galaxy S4 handsets, with some complaining that the company was diluting the range. Too many though it gives consumers more choice when looking to purchase a new smartphone, and we now have the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active UK SIM free price and availability.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is pretty similar to the standard version of the Galaxy S4 except it is tougher with dust and waterproofing thrown into the mix, and the fact it only has an 8-megapixel rear facing camera instead of a 13-megapixel unit.

Now though the handset has gone up for sale with some UK retailers with the Carphone Warehouse pricing the device at ?529.95 SIM free, and have stock available for immediate delivery to a local store or your home. The retailer also has a feature where you can check to see if your local store has any stock already, which for the nearest one to our office was showing out of stock.

Another retailer Unlocked Mobiles has the device priced at ?494.98 with stock available along with free next day delivery being offered. Online retailer Clove has some colours of the device expected in on July 10th and has priced it at ?486 including VAT, while Expansys has the grey version available for immediate shipping at ?514.99.

Amazon has the device down to be released on August 1st but is asking a whooping ?676.27 for the handset but it will surely come down once the retailer receives its stock.

Are you considering getting the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active?

Fugitive oil chief remanded in NAB custody

ISLAMABAD - An accountability court has remanded Tauqir Sadiq, the fugitive former chief of the Oil and Gas Regularity Authority (Ogra), in NAB custody for 14 days.
Tauqir Sadiq? the prime accused in Rs 82 billion corruption scam? was presented in the accountability court on Tuesday. Appearing in the court, Tauqir pleaded not guilty before the bench, and accused authorities of mistreating him.
During the court proceeding, Tauqir denied corruption allegations, saying that National Accountability Bureau?s investigation team has tortured him.
?There is still no charge-sheet against me. All charges levelled against me are baseless,? he said in court. Tauqir said his life was in danger. ?I should be granted access to legal counsel. NAB officials are threatening to break my bones and shoot me to death, pressurising me into pleading guilty,? he claimed.
The bench also ordered a medical examination of Tauqir Sadiq, who will be presented in court again on July 23.
Earlier Tuesday, NAB team brought Tauqir Sadiq back to Pakistan on a private airliner and he was shifted to Rawalpindi soon after landing at Islamabad?s Benazir International Airport. The development came after an Abu Dhabi court ordered deportation of Tauqir Sadiq on June 3.
Amir Jalil Bobra adds: Tauqir Sadiq landed at Islamabad International Airport in the custody of a single NAB official who handed him over to the NAB investigation cell situated in Sector G-6 Islamabad. Tauqir Sadiq alleged ?Superior judiciary? had personal grudges against me,? reliable sources told The Nation.
Interpol UAE official Captain Abdullah handed Tauqir Sadiq over to the NAB Investigation Officer Waqas Ahmed Khan at Abu Dhabi International Airport, the sources said.
During his body search at airport, the NAB official recovered 1,410 dirhams, 50 pages written in Urdu and English and a list of telephone numbers of his jail fellows from India, Bangladesh, Philippines, Afghanistan and some local numbers from Lahore and Peshawar.
The documents recovered from Tauqir were written in Al-Ain Jail of Abu Dhabi. In his writings, he termed the Ogra scam as a political move against the previous government and claimed to go to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against the judgment of the apex court of Pakistan, the sources said.
Tauqir refused to sign the paper recovered from him and threatened the NAB official that he would not succeed in obtaining his physical remand, the sources added.
Similarly, a Blackberry mobile set, glasses, a purse, a pouch and blue passport were recovered from him at airport.
A blue passport is issued for three years to an official of the government of Pakistan, but the blue passport recovered from him had been issued for five years in violation of the rules and regulations, the sources further said.
During the preliminary investigation at the airport, Tauqir showed arrogance and threatened the NAB official of dire consequences. Tauqir, in presence of a Abu Dhabi-based TV journalist, said ?I played with the judicial system of UAE for six months and now I will play with the judicial system of Pakistan,? the sources said.
When contacted, an official of NAB on the condition of anonymity confirmed the story and said Tauqir was trying to politicise the issue. Answering a question, the official said, ?No special cell is arranged for the proclaimed offender, he will not be treated as a VIP and jailed in a solitary confinement.? Further course of interrogation and investigation would start right away, the official claimed.

Gun industry group sues Conn. over gun law

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? A national gun industry group on Monday filed the latest lawsuit challenging Connecticut's new wide-ranging gun law, passed in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation Inc., which is based in Newtown a few miles from Sandy Hook, claims the emergency legislation was illegally passed in April without proper public input, time for adequate review by members of the General Assembly, or a statement of facts explaining why lawmakers needed to bypass the usual legislative process.

"There was no emergency and so there's no statement of facts as to why this is an emergency," Lawrence G. Keane, the foundation's senior vice president and general counsel, told The Associated Press, arguing the public's federal and state constitutional due process rights were therefore violated. "There was truly no emergency other than a political one."

Keane said the foundation wants a U.S. District Court judge to strike down the law as invalid, prohibiting it from being enforced. Many parts of the legislation have already taken effect, such as an expanded ban on guns considered to be assault weapons and a ban on large-capacity ammunition magazines.

"The correct, legally required process was not followed," Keane said.

Susan Kinsman, a spokeswoman for Attorney General George Jepsen, said the office had not yet been served with the complaint as of Monday afternoon and therefore could not comment.

Connecticut's bill originally stemmed from a legislative task force charged with reviewing the state's gun laws, mental health care and school security following the Dec. 14 school shooting that left 20 first graders and six educators dead. Those recommendations were passed on to the top leaders of the General Assembly, both Democrats and Republicans, who ultimately crafted a compromise bill behind closed doors that was presented to the rank-and-file lawmakers on April 1.

The final bipartisan, 139-page bill ? designated as "emergency certified" and therefore bypassing public hearings and committee votes ? received final legislative approval early April 4. It passed 26-10 in the Senate and 105-44 in the House of Representatives. Both were bipartisan votes. Gov. Dannel Malloy, a Democrat, signed the bill into law the same day.

Malloy, House Speaker Brendan Sharkey, Senate President Donald Williams Jr., and other state officials are named as the defendants in the lawsuit, which is the third challenge to the state's new gun law but the first to accuse the legislature and governor of violating the law in order to pass it.

In March, a group of Connecticut organizations that support gun rights, pistol permit holders and gun sellers filed a lawsuit claiming, among other things, the assault weapons and large-capacity magazine bans violate their rights to bear arms and to equal protection under the law. A month earlier, a New London resident filed a suit on behalf of the Disabled Americans for Firearms Rights, arguing the new law infringes on the rights of people with disabilities to protect themselves.

Jepsen said in March that his office believes the legislation, considered among the strictest in the nation, is lawful and that his office was prepared to defend it against any court challenges.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation is a nonprofit entity that represents the interests of more than 9,500 federally licensed firearms manufacturers, distributors and retailers, as well as companies that manufacture, distribute and sell shooting and hunting-related goods and services. The foundation also represents sportsmen's associations, gun clubs and shooting ranges.

What's the Best iPhone 5 Case?

So, I'm a guy that doesn't keep his phones in cases. I'm pretty damn careful with my devices, so I've never really needed one. But hey, accidents happen, and the iPhone 5 isn't exactly a tank, so I've finally decided to pick up a nice case.

Keyword: nice. I don't want a one of those silicone or plastic cases, I want something that feels nice in the hand, while looking just as nice. I'm looking for a case made out of nice, high quality materials. So, seeing as I've never been in this market before, I'm a bit lost. Any recommendations? I have a white iPhone 5, by the way.

In Okinawa, talk of break from Japan turns serious

    POSTED:

NAHA, Japan ? In a windowless room in a corner of a bustling market where stalls displayed severed pigs' heads and bolts of kimono silk, Okinawans gathered to learn about a political idea that until recently few had dared to take seriously; declaring their island chain's political independence from Japan.

About two dozen people of all ages listened as speakers challenged the official view of Okinawa as inherently part of homogeneous Japan, arguing instead that Okinawans are a different ethnic group whose once independent tropical islands were forcibly seized by Japan in 1879. Then, to lighten the mood, the organizers showed "Sayonara, Japan!", a comedy about a fictional Okinawan island that becomes its own little republic.

"Until now, you were mocked if you spoke of independence," said one speaker, Kobun Higa, 71, a retired journalist whose book on the history of the tiny independence movement has become a hot seller online. "But independence may be the only real way to free ourselves from the American bases."

Higa and other advocates admit that few islanders would actually seek independence for Okinawa, the southernmost Japanese island chain, which is home to 1.4 million residents and more than half of the 50,000 U.S. troops and sailors based in Japan. But discontent with the heavy U.S. presence and a growing perception that the central government is ignoring Okinawans' pleas to reduce it have made an increasing number of islanders willing to at least flirt publicly with the idea of breaking apart in a way that local politicians and scholars say they have not seen in decades.

In May, a newly formed group led by Okinawan university professors held a symposium on independence that drew 250 people. A tiny political party that advocates separation from Japan through peaceful means has been revived after decades of dormancy, though its candidates have fared poorly in recent elections. And on his blog, a member of Parliament from Okinawa recently went so far as to post an entry titled "Okinawa, It's Finally Time for Independence From Yamato," using the Okinawan word for the rest of Japan.

"Before, independence was just something we philosophized about over drinks," said Masahide Ota, a former governor of Okinawa, who is not a member of the movement. "Now, it is being taken much more seriously."

The independence movement remains nascent, with a few hundred active adherents at most. But Ota and others say it still has the potential to complicate Japan's unfolding contest with China for influence in the region.

That struggle expanded recently to include what appears to be a semiofficial campaign in China to question Japanese rule of Okinawa. Some analysts see the campaign as a ploy to strengthen China's hand in a dispute over a smaller group of islands that has captured international headlines in recent months. Some Chinese scholars have called for exploiting the independence movement to say there are splits even in Japan over the legitimate ownership of islands annexed during Japan's imperial expansion in the late 19th century, as Okinawa and the smaller island group were.

Okinawa has long looked and felt different from the rest of Japan, with the islands' tropical climate, vibrant musical culture and lower average incomes setting it apart. Strategically situated in the center of East Asia, the islands, once known as the Kingdom of the Ryukyus, have had a tortured history with Japan since the takeover, including the forced suicides of Okinawan civilians by Japanese troops during World War II and the imposition of U.S. bases after the war.

For years, Okinawans directed much of their ire over the bases at the United States. But that changed four years ago when the Japanese prime minister at the time, Yukio Hatoyama, reneged on campaign pledges to move the bustling Marine air base at Futenma off Okinawa, rather than to a less populated site on the island as previous governments had approved. After that, many Okinawans shifted much of their anger toward the rest of Japan, which wants the U.S. military presence to offset China's growing power, but is unwilling to shoulder more of the burden of bases for fear of crime, noise and accidents.

Local leaders and scholars say the last time Okinawans spoke so openly of independence was during a period of sometimes violent unrest against U.S. control before the United States ended its postwar occupation of the islands in 1972.

"There is a growing feeling that Okinawans just exchanged one colonial master in Washington for another one in Tokyo," said Shinako Oyakawa, 32, a doctoral student at the University of the Ryukyus and a co-founder of Okinawan Studies 107, a group promoting research into Ryukyuan ethnic identity.

Such discontent has helped nurture groups like hers, which seek to promote the idea that the islanders form a distinct ethnic group. It has also led to the creation of places like Ryukyu Hall, a privately run school that opened last year and offers classes on Okinawan language and culture.

On a recent weekend, about 30 people gathered at the school, a small, sparsely furnished two-story building, to hear accounts in the Ryukyuan language by survivors of the U.S. invasion of Okinawa in 1945.

"Regaining our identity is the first step toward regaining independence," said Midori Teruya, 41, a co-founder of the school in Ginowan, the site of the Futenma air base.

The talk of independence has grown enough that it is being heard in Tokyo, where some conservative newspapers have begun calling the Okinawan independence activists "pawns" of China.

Whether or not the activists are pawns, there is certainly some discussion in China about using the independence movement. Recently, an editorial in The Global Times, a state-run Chinese newspaper, said China could pressure Japan by "fostering forces in Okinawa that seek the restoration of the independence of the Ryukyu chain."

Few believe China is about to pursue ownership of Okinawa. But Japanese analysts see the informal campaign as the latest gambit in China's attempts to take over the smaller group of islands, known as the Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, by essentially warning that China could expand its claims beyond those islands if Japan ignores its arguments.

"It will create problems for us if the Chinese government tries to use this issue," said Masaki Tomochi, a professor at Okinawa International University who helped organize the symposium on independence in May.

Tomochi and other activists said that in the remote event that Okinawa became independent, they felt little fear of a Chinese takeover because the Ryukyus had held friendly ties with China for centuries before the Japanese takeover.

Tomochi's group is planning a second symposium to present research on how small Pacific island nations like Palau could serve as a model for a future Ryukyu republic. The idea is to try to overcome what he sees as the main challenge his movement faces: winning over Okinawans who seem basically content with their Japanese-style living standards.

"People are talking independence now, but how realistic is it?" asked Yoshinao Hiyane, 22, an economics major at Okinawa International University. "My generation has grown up Japanese."

At the movie screening in the market, independence supporters tried to bolster the notion that their idea is more than a fantasy by handing out color-copied "currency" of a Ryukyu republic. They stood before a blue banner with three stars that the organizer, Chosuke Yara, called its flag.

"Recently, the interests of the Japanese people and the Ryukyu people have clearly diverged," said Yara, 61, the head of the tiny Ryukyu Independence Party. "Independence is an idea whose time has come."

Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer Cancel Trip to China as 'Lone Ranger' Waits for Release Date (Exclusive)

Disney has scrapped a trip that would have sent stars Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to China to promote "The Lone Ranger" this month, the studio told TheWrap on Friday.?

A studio spokesman for the studio confirmed that the July 15 trip had been moved, and issued the following statement to TheWrap: "As part of their promotional activities for 'The Lone Ranger,' Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer plan to visit China in early September closer to an expected release date."

Disney had to cancel the trip because it still does not know when the movie will open there, a frustration familiar to every Hollywood studio when it comes to the world's second largest film market, according to an individual with knowledge of the movie's plans.

Costar Armie Hammer and director Gore Verbinski were all supposed to be part of the July promotional trip, the individual said.

7 'Bad' Foods You Should Be Eating (Op-Ed)

Katherine Tallmadge, M.A., R.D., is a registered dietitian; author of "Diet Simple: 195 Mental Tricks, Substitutions, Habits & Inspirations" (LifeLine Press, 2011); and a frequent national commentator on nutrition topics. This article was adapted from one that first appeared in the Washington Post. Tallmadge contributed this article to LiveScience's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.

Are you shying away from "bad" foods that are actually good for you? With all the hoopla about healthful eating, it's hard to separate fact from fiction.

As a nutrition consultant, I've come to realize there is no shortage of surprises and superstitions in the world of nutrition . As a follow-up to 5 So-Called Health Foods You Should Avoid, I thought it would be fun to give you reasons to enjoy some of your favorite "bad" foods that could actually be good for you.

    Gluten and wheat

They are "the most demonized ingredients beyond high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oil," said Melissa Abbott, culinary director at the Hartman Group, a company specializing in consumer research. Yet decades of studies have found that gluten-containing foods ? such as whole wheat, rye and barley ? are vital for good health and associated with a reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and excess weight.

"Wheat is a good source of fiber, vitamins and minerals," said Joanne Slavin, nutrition professor at the University of Minnesota. She added that the confusion about gluten, a protein, has caused some people to avoid eating wheat and other grains. Only about 1 percent of the population ? those with celiac disease or a wheat allergy ? cannot tolerate gluten and must eradicate it from their diet to ease abdominal pain and other symptoms, including the ability to fully absorb vitamins.

One reason wheat-free or gluten-free diets are popular is that people who don't eat wheat often end up bypassing excess calories in sweets and snack foods. Then, they start feeling better, lose weight and mistakenly attribute their success to gluten or wheat avoidance. Learn more about a gluten-free diet and who may benefit from it in Go Gluten Free? Most People Shouldn't (Op-Ed).

    Eggs

Eggs also don't deserve their bad reputation. In recent decades, their high cholesterol content has been thought to play a role in increasing LDL ("bad") cholesterol and heart-disease risk . But cholesterol in food is a minor factor contributing to high blood cholesterol for most people, and studies have not confirmed a correlation between eggs and increased heart-disease risk. The major determinant of LDL cholesterol is saturated fat, and while eggs are high in cholesterol (184 milligrams in the yolk)they're relatively low in saturated fat ? about 1.6 grams in the yolk.

Interestingly, some of the biggest egg eaters in the world, the Japanese, have low cholesterol and heart-disease rates, in part because they eat a diet low in saturated fat. In contrast, Americans eat eggs alongside sausage, bacon and buttered toast.

"The amount that one egg a day raises cholesterol in the blood is extremely small," says Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard's School of Public Health. "Elevations in LDL (bad) cholesterol of this small magnitude could easily be countered by other healthy aspects of eggs."

    Potatoes

Potatoes have been blamed for increasing blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, excess weight and Type 2 diabetes. A recent Harvard study that followed large populations and their disease rates linked potato consumption with being overweight, blaming it on the blood glucose rise.

But many foods, including whole-wheat bread and whole-grain cereals, cause similar spikes in blood glucose, and are correlated with superior health and lower body weights.

How could the higher body weight in the Harvard study be explained? The study lumped all potato products together ? including potato chips and french fries, which are, of course, very fattening versions of potatoes usually eaten in large portions alongside hamburgers, hot dogs and sodas.

"It's an easy food to attack, but the meal pattern may be the culprit," said David Baer, a research leader at the Agricultural Research Service of the Department of Agriculture. "Other epidemiological studies have not verified a connection between potatoes and weight gain or any diseases, and no clinical studies have shown a connection.".

Potatoes are a great source of potassium, vitamin C and fiber that many cultures ? Scandinavians, Russians, Irish and Peruvians ? relied on as a nutritious staple for centuries. And they were not fat.

    Fruits

People often ask me if fruit is too high in sugar, especially for diabetics. This fear of fruit, I believe, is left over from the Atkins craze, which discouraged eating some fruits on the grounds that they are high in carbohydrates.

Avoiding fruit could actually damage your health. Study after study over many decades has shown that eating fruit can reduce the risk of some cancers, heart disease, blood pressure and diabetes. [10 New Ways to Eat Well]

Fruit is high in water and fiber, which help you feel full with fewer calories ? one reason why their consumption is correlated with lower body weight. Even though they contain simple sugars, most fruits have a relatively low glycemic index. That is, when you eat fruit, your blood sugar raises only moderately, especially when compared with refined sugar or flour products. Several health organizations ? including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) (via the U.S. Dietary Guidelines), the National Cancer Institute, and the American Heart Association ? recommend Americans eat at least five cups of fruits and vegetables a day because of their superior health benefits.

    Soy

Though popular for centuries in many Asian cuisines, soy is sometimes seen as dangerous after studies found elevated rates of breast cancer among rats when they were fed a concentrated soy derivative. But studies looking at whole soy foods in humans have not found a connection. In fact, the reverse may be true.

Soy, "when consumed in childhood or adolescence, may make breast tissue less vulnerable to cancer development later in life and probably has no effect on breast-cancer risk when consumption begins in adulthood," said Karen Collins, registered dietitian and nutrition adviser with the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Actually, Collins said, the evidence is so strong that soy protects against heart disease that the FDA allowed a health claim for labels on soy food products. [12 Tips for Eating Healthy on a Budget ]

    Alcohol

Alcohol is feared because of the potential for abuse and alcoholism, as well as complications such as liver disease ? which are all valid concerns.

But decades' worth of research shows that moderate alcohol consumption "can reduce deaths from most causes, particularly heart disease, and that it raises HDL (good) cholesterol," the USDA's David Baer said. Wine may have additional benefits because its grapes are filled with nutrients called polyphenols, which reduce blood clotting, inflammation and oxidation.

The key is to drink alcohol moderately and with meals. What's moderation? One serving daily for women and two servings for men, with a serving being 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or 1.5 ounces of spirits.

    Fried foods

While it's true that frying food usually increases its caloric content, that doesn't necessarily make it unhealthful.

As long as food is fried in healthful oil instead of butter, shortening, or trans fat, and it's eaten in moderation, it isn't less healthy. In fact, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K; and heart-healthy, cancer-preventive carotenoids, such as beta-carotene (found in carrots and sweet potatoes), lycopene (found in tomatoes) and lutein/zeaxanthin (found in deep-green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale), need fat in order to be absorbed by the body.

"The consumption of certain fats, such as saturated fatty acids and trans fatty acids [fats that are solid at room temperature], is associated with an ... increased risk of cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, the unsaturated fats, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids [e.g., canola, safflower and olive oils] have significant metabolic benefits and are health promoting," said the 2010 U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
